Big box retailer Kmart had a 141,000 square foot store in Penn Station that opened on 3 October 1996
just after the peak of Kmart's profitibility and sales. The company subsequently struggled to compete in the
big box marketplace and suffered through years of declining sales, failed rebrandings and mergers, and a bankruptcy.
The Penn Station store closed in March of 2020, coincidentally at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
