Lamb's Theatre

140 West 44th Street (between Broadway & 6th Avenue)

Opened: 1905

Architect: Stanford White

This neo-Georgian building was built for the Lamb's Club, a professional theatre club named after British drama critic Charles Lamb. The building was doubled in size with a duplicate Western addition added in 1915. The building included grill and billiard rooms on the first floor, a banquet hall on the 2nd floor, a theatre on the 3rd floor, with sleeping quarters and offices on the upper floors.

The building later housed two off/off-off B'way theatres: a small 90-seat first floor theatre and a third-floor 350-seat proscenium theatre. I sound engineered The Prince and the Pauper there in 2002 - one of the more trying experiences of my theatrical career. The landmarked building ceased to be a theatre shortly thereafter and was gut renovated to create a hotel and restaurant.
