DTW was founded in 1965 by Jeff Duncan, Art Bauman and Jack Moore as a choreographers' collective devoted to the sponsorship and practical support of the work of colleagues and early career artists.

In 2000 (?), Executive Producer David R. White convinced his board to purchase their existing, building, hire architect Ed Rawlings to demolish it and build a new structure, and sell the air rights above the building. DTW occupies the first four floors with the seven floors above it dedicated to revenue-producing condominiums.

DTW merged with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company in 2011.
