Simon Bolivar (1783 - 1830) was a military general and advocate for Pan-American independence who is credited with the liberation of Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Panama from Spanish domination. This is the third statue of Bolivar for the park. The first statue by R. De Las Cora was installed in 1891 on Bolivar Hill (a knoll near West 83rd Street) but was soon removed by the park board when it received extensive criticism. Italian sculptor Giovanni Turinni submitted a new statue in 1897 that was rejected by the National Sculpture Society, who advised the Park Board on sculptures. In 1916, Sally James Farnham (1876-1943) won a competition by the Venezuelan government for a new statue that was dedicated on Bolivar Hill on April 19, 1921.
