Jose de San Martin

Argentine general Jose de San Martin (1778 - 1850) helped Argentina, Chile, and Peru gain independence from the Spanish in the early part of the 19th century. The statue is a replica of a 1862 work by French sculptor Louis Joseph Daumas (1801 - 1887) that was given to the City in in 1950 in exchange for a statue of George Washington. The black granite pedestal was designed by the firm of Clarke & Rapuano and the monument was dedicated on May 25, 1951. (NYCGovParks.org).
