LIRR Lower Montauk Branch

The South Side Railroad of Long Island was originally chartered in 1860 and opened in 1867. It was reorganized as the Southern Railroad of Long Island in 1874 and then leased to the LIRR in 1876 and became the LIRR's Southern Division. It was reorganized again as the as the Brooklyn and Montauk Railroad in 1879, resulting in a name change in 1880 to the LIRR Montauk Division. It was finally merged into the LIRR in 1889.

The western part of the Montauk Branch in Queens between Long Island City and Jamaica is referred to as the Lower Montauk Division and in 1998 became a freight-only line.

Access to the ROW in the industrial sections of Queens is comparatively convenient, although I never took the time to walk the line. So, these are some random shots of the Lower Montauk Branch that I captured during my time in Queens.
