This public elementary school was named after Colonel John S. Wolfe, captain of the 20th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. The school was later purchased by the University of Illinois. The building was renovated in 1966 and used for programs for children with special needs and gifted young children until the 1980s. The surplus building was listed for sale in 2020, with the historic building designation permitting demolition in the absence of an acceptable offer. However, as of 2024, the derelict building was still standing tall.
