Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles, CA

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is a postmodern structure that opened in 2002 and was designed by Rafael Moneo as the mother church for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The site at 555 West Temple Street (catercorner to the city's Music Center) is the result of a land swap with the City of Los Angeles that resolved a preservation fight when the already-inadequate Cathedral of Saint Vibiana was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The site includes a 3,000-seat auditorium, a 2.5 acre plaza, office space, a conference center, and housing for clergy.
