Pacific Telephone Tower
420 South Grand Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90071
This telephone equipment facility and tower was designed by John B. and Donald D. Parkinson and opened in 1961. It is a surprisingly attractive work of modernism, especially in contrast to ordinarily unornamented and boxy phone equipment buildings. The building is distinguished not only by a 448-foot microwave tower that ascends from a rectangular base to an octogonal pair of platforms, a mural on the southern face, and wall artwork on the Grand Street side that comobines mosaic tiles with obsolete brass phone switching equipment.
