The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine
1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street)
New York, NY 10025
The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine is the cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Although initial discussions about building a Episcopal cathedral began in 1828, the cornerstone was not laid until 1892, and a variety of geopolitical and economic issues delayed completion and consecration of the entire length of the cathedral until 1941. The original design was by George Heins and Christopher Grant LaFarge although the extended construction period incorporates the work of numerous designers.
