This live and film venue was built by Julian Saenger as the flagship of several theatres he owned in the south. After the obligatory period of decline and multiplexing, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and renovated with a reopening in 1980. The theatre was severely damaged in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina and was in the middle of a $38 million renovation when I visited in 2013.
