Madison-Morgan Cultural Center

The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center began life in 1895 as one of the first graded public schools in the south and served Madison's students until 1957. The Romanesque building was used as a library until being reopened as a cultural facility in 1976. The old school auditorium was renovated in 1994 for live performance, complete with the original wooden seats. Madison, GA was one of the pleasant surprises of the my 2006 tour - a lovely small town with a number of nice restaurants and antique shops downtown, just a few blocks from the theatre. The town was founded in 1809 and as " The town that Sherman refused to burn", has had a strong committment to its history and to historical preservation (4/13/2006)
