Toledo Terminal Upper Maumee River Swing Bridge
This 1,450 foot railroad bridge over the Maumee River was build around 1902. It was built by the Toledo Terminal Railroad, which from the maps I've seen on the web appears to have run a loop around what was then the bustling industrial center of Toledo, Ohio. As Toledo became the heart of the rust belt, the bridge was abandoned following a destructive derailment in 1982. The bridge ran next to the current Ohio Turnpike (I-90) river crossing, peering across like a ghost from another time.
There was a plan to turn the bridge and the rest of the abandoned right-of-way into a pedestrian trail. An unused part of the right-of-way was sold by CSX to the Metroparks of the Toledo Area for $6.5 million, but the bridge was in such bad shape that restoration of the bridge was determined to be, "not feasable nor prudent."
