Hoan Bridge

The Daniel Webster Hoan Bridge is a steel through-arch bridge that carries I-794 over the mouth of the Milwaukee River just West of Lake Michigan. The 1,140-foot total length includes a 600-foot suspended span.
The bridge has a checkered history. Despite being completed in 1972, local activism against the Milwaukee County freeway plan delayed connecting roadways until 1977, with completion of the full Lake Freeway extension delayed until 1998. Then in 2000, a section of the northbound approach span failed, requiring a dramatic demolition and a year of repairs to replace the span.
