Fifteen Central Park West is bounded by West 61st and 62nd streets,
Broadway on the west and Central Park West on the east. The east side
of this irregular block was the home of the Mayflower Hotel and the
west side had been a vacant lot since I moved to the city in the early
1990s. I followed construction of of the building since the beginning
of the excavation for the foundation in 2005. In contrast to the numerous
asymmetrical glass curtain-wall microtowers that were, unfortunately,
very fashionable during this time period for new construction, the
twin 15 CPW buildings as designed by Robert A.M. Stern Associates has a very formidable
limestone exterior, which is harmonious with many of the other magnificent
early 20th century residential towers on CPW. Unfortunately, that also means
I will never be able to afford to live there on any of the 43 floors.
