Samuel Lord and George Washington Taylor opened their first store on the Lower East Side in 1826. After occupying a number of locations, the store moved to this building included a concert hall with a pipe organ, elaborate dining rooms, a gymnasium, and a doctor's and dentist's office. The high-visibility but low-profit location was closed in 2018 after the Christmas holiday.
