An oddity about 840 Eighth Avenue is the carved names of prominent European
explorers engraved above the windows on the sixth floor: Marquette, Le June,
Cartier, La Salle Dongan, Columbus, Carroll, De Leon, Joques, Montcalm and
Vespucci. Justin Ferate pointed
out that they are all Roman Catholics, and that the building was the clubhouse
for the Knights of Columbus. Because Catholics were not permitted to become
Masons, the Knights of Columbus was their response. The Knights of Columbus
name is engraved on the band below the windows and their
seal is in the oval cartouche above the curved window in the center.
I had the honor of having the French death metal band,
Scorch, use one of my photos
(with significant modifications) for one of their album covers
