American Encaustic Tiling
59th Street IRT Subway Station
New York, NY 10023
This plaque and surrounding tiles were part of a trial of a variety of different tiling materials by the station architects, Heins and LaFarge. This plaque was revealed when a false wall was demolished during the 2007 renovation of the Columbus Street / 58th Street Station.
American Encaustic Titling Company was an Ohio firm that specialized in glazed tiles. Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles where the surface patterns are inlaid into the tile with different colors of clay.
