This art moderne facility was originally opened by Pathé Cinema and specialized in art and foreign film. Marlene Dietrich cut the inaugural ribbon. The theatre passed through a number of owners and names, and became Manhattan's only single-screen theatre with the closing of the Ziegfeld in January of 2016. The theatre was briefly shuttered in August 2019, but reopened in November of that year under the auspices of the streaming movie service Netflix, presumably to provide a screening venue needed for special events and qualification for film awards.
