Built by Arthur Hammerstein, son of Oscar Hammerstein I, it opened with an ill-fated production of The Golden Dawn in 1927. When Hammerstein declared bankruptcy in 1931, it was renamed the Manhattan Theatre. CBS began using it for radio and television broadcasting in 1936. It was bought by CBS in 1947 to house its Sunday night variety show and renamed for Ed Sullivan in 1967. Converted in the 1993 for live tapings of CBS's Late Night with David Letterman, who was succeeded by Stephen Colbert in 2015.
