Carrere Memorial

This terrace and balustrade are a monument to architect John Mervin Carrere (1858 - 1911), who with his partner, Thomas Hastings (1860 - 1921), created a large number of major private and public structures during the "City Beautiful" movement at the turn of the 20th century. Well known extant works include the New York Public Library, the Manhattan Bridge approach, the Frick mansion and the current Hamilton Fish Recreation Center. Carrere was killed in an auto accident in 1911, just before the opening of the NYPL, and this memorial was a gift from Hastings to the city in 1916.
