Hudson Riverwalk (83rd St. - 92nd St.)

This section of the Hudson riverfront had long been an odd gap in the greenbelt surrounding Manhattan. While there were lovely esplanades just to the south and the north, the placement of the railroad tracks away from the cliffs forces the Henry Hudson Parkway almost flush with the Hudson River, leaving only a narrow walkway for pedestrians. For years, this area had been minimally maintained with signs to the south and north warning pedestrians to cross under the parkway and use the esplanade that is built over the railroad tracks to the east.

After an extensive period of consideration, groundbreaking for a pedestrian platform through this area was held on October 17, 2007, with scheduled completion for the Spring of 2009. The $15.7 million project had an official ribbon cutting on May 20, 2010, attended by Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, City Council Member Gale Brewer and Riverside Park Fund President John Herrold.
