Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium

Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium was opened in 1997 and replaced Louis Armstrong Stadium as the park's main tennis facility. The 23,000-seat stadium cost $254 million and is the main arena for the U.S. Open. During the remainder of the year, the indoor and outdoor courts of the stadium are open to the public. The facility is named after Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. (1943-1993), a dominant player in the late 1960s and 1970s who was forced into an early retirement by heart problems and into an early death from AIDS contracted from a contaminated blood transfusion.
