Strawberry Fields

This 2.5 acre section of the park is a memorial to musician John Lennon, who lived in the Dakota at 72nd and CPW overlooking this area. It was renamed by the city council in 1981 after Lennon's assassination just steps from the park. Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, later donated $1 million to the Central Park Conservancy to relandscape and maintain the area. The focal point of the area is a large black-and-white mosaic in the center of a large sitting area. The mosaic was a gift from Naples, Italy and is a reproduction from Pompeii with the single word "Imagine", the title of one of Lennon's songs.
