Duke Ellington
Fifth Avenue (at 110th Street)
Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974) was an American composer, bandleader and pianist who came to prominence performing in Harlem and who lived a large part of his life in New York City. This 8-foot bronze by Robert Graham (b. 1938) was a gift from the Duke Ellington Memorial Fund that was unveiled in 1997. The statue sits on a tableau next to an open grand piano. The platform stands on three 10-foot tall pillars crowned with nude female figures representing the muses. The monument sits in a small ampitheatre within the traffic circle also named after Ellington.
