The Gates (2005)

The Gates was a temporary art installation in Central Park by New York artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude that was displayed during February of 2005. The work stretched across 23 miles of park walkways with hanging saffron-colored fabric drooping through two different sizes of free-standing metal rims mounted in granite bases. The artists envisioned a "golden ceiling creating warm shadows" for passersby to enjoy as they walked along the paths.

Although, to many of us, the work seemed a rather pointless expenditure of money, it was, admittedly, a remarkably photogenic and popular attraction during its two-week life. And its ability to survive in New York with limited protection and without any obvious major acts of vandalism is a testament to something.
