2004 Republican National Convention Protests

In a crude but effective effort to exploit the September 11 attacks for political gain, the Republican party held their 2004 national convention in New York city. In reaction, opponents of the administration (including a large percentage of the city's residents) held a variety of public demonstrations in protest.

The largest of the protests occurred on August 29, a day before the official start of the convention. United for Peace and Justice held a huge march that started in Chelsea, marched past Madison Square Garden, then crossed East on 34th Street and down Fifth Avenue to Union Square. The march was slowed both by an overwhelming turnout and a fire set by anarchists near Penn Station about halfway through the march.

Within the UPJ march, a group called 1000coffins.org organized display of 600 flag-draped cardboard coffins in remembrance of the men and women of the American armed forces who had made the supreme sacrifice in Iraq - a number that was approaching 1,000 at the time of the march, and would ultimately rise to over 4,800, half-again as many people as dies in the 9/11 attacks.
