The Church of the Heavenly Rest
1085 Fifth Avenue (at East 90th Street)
New York, NY 10128
Opened: 1929
Architects: Bertram Goodhue; Mayers, Murray and Phillip
This congregation was initially founded by American Civil War veterans in 1865 on Fifth Avenue at 46th street. This site was purchased by Andrew Carnegie in 1917 to prevent development adjacent to his mansion across the street. His widow sold the site to the church in 1926, "for a Christian church no higher than 75 feet, exclusive of steeple." The stock market crash precluded funding for completion of decorative scultpure, leaving the facade largely unadorned.
