Across Broadway from the Beacon Theatre is Fairway, a grocery store with two locations on the Upper West Side. Fairway's motto is "Like no other store," and it lives up to the creed. It"s specialty is fresh fruits, vegetables and breads along with imported cheeses... at surprisingly reasonable prices.

I'm not sure exactly what the store's history is, although it was up and thriving when I got to the city in 1991. It shut down the D'Agostino's next door around 1999, ultimately expanded north into that space and south into what was a Love's drugstore. A much larger, cleaner and more expensive Food Emporium (A&P) opened next door in the Ansonia (a former Tower Records location) but couldn't compete with cheap quality and closed in December 2001. Ditto for the Gristedes that subsequently toughed out the Ansonia space for about a year.
