Northtown was the first phase of the New York State
Urban Development Corporation's plan for the redevelopment
of Roosevelt Island as a planned residential community.
The four buildings (totaling 2,100 units) opened in 1975
and are constructed in a U shape with the open portions
facing the river. The actual construction has not
held up that well in style or substance, although it's
a fabulous example of mid-70's utopian brutalism.
