The iconic symbol of New York City - a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper at the
intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. Designed by Gregory Johnson
and his architectural firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon. Site excavation began on
January 22, 1930 and the opening ceremony was held on March 1, 1931.
The ASCE has named the Empire State Building one of the Seven Wonders of the
Modern World. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986
and is protected as a designated landmark by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.
