Westbeth Artists Housing was developed by the J.M. Kaplan Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts in 1968 to house artists. It opened in 1970 as an adaptive reuse of 13 West Village buildings that had originally housed the famed Bell Laboratories until 1966. As the artists aged in place, the facility became a Naturally Occurring Retirement Community.
