Paradise Garage

This attractive but otherwise unremarkable parking garage in Greenwich Village was home to one of the more notable discoteques of the late 1970s and early 1980s when disco briefly ruled America. The garage building itself dates from at least 1925. The NYC DOB website lists construction and demolition permits on the address as early as 1903 but that was probably the previous building on this site. Michael Broady and Mel Cheren opened the Paradise Garage in 1976. DJ Larry Levan made the space famous spinning disks on a booming sound system designed by Richard Long. The space closed on September 26, 1987 and ultimately reverted to a more natural role as a facility for the communications company Verizon.
