Hongneung
Hongneung (also spelled Hongyureung) is one of 40 royal tombs for the members of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Hongneung hold the remains of Emperor Gojong (1852-1919), Korea's last king. It is also a monument to his wife (and my purported ancestor), Queen Min (Empress Myeongseong, 1851-1895). Min's remains were burned and dispersed when she was assasinated by the Japanese following her attempt to build stronger ties with Russia and offset Japanese imperial plans for Korea.
