This is a surviving remnant of University Hall, the first university-built
classroom building. The building stood from 1873 until 1938, when
structurally-unsound building was demolished and ultimately replaced by the
Illini Union. The stone portal entrance was preserved at Robert Allerton Park
in Monticello, and moved to this plaza location on the east side of campus in
1998 with a gift from Alan and Phyllis Welsh Hallene.
