Pike Place Market
This public market was originally built to provide a venue for local farmers to sell directly to the public and bypass wholesalers who were charging high prices to the city's growing population while leaving farmers with little to show for their efforts. Frank Goodwin led a redevelopment of the market with permanent arcades that was largely complete by 1922. The aging structures were slated for demolition in the 1960s, but architect Victor Steinbrueck led an effort that resulted in the creation of a 17-acre historic district approved by voters on 2 November 1971.
