First Methodist Episcopal Church

801 Fifth Avenue

Seattle, WA 98104

Opened: 1908

Architects: James Hansen Schack Sr. and Daniel Riggs Huntington

This Beaux Arts building was built as the second home for the First Methodist Episcopal Church. The congregation added an education wing in 1950 on the eastern corner of the block. After a pitched 23-year battle between preservationists, developers, and the church itself, the congregation sold the building in 2007 to Daniels Development and moved to a suburban location at Second Avenue North and Denny Way that was dedicated on 31 January 2010. The 1908 building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. The education wing was demolished for a $450 MM, 660-foot mixed-use tower originally called 5th and Columbia, then The Mark, then F5 Tower after a tech company that leased all of the office space. The preserved sanctuary served as Daniels Recital Hall before reopening in 2018 as an event space called The Sanctuary.
