The International Museum of Surgical Science
opened in 1954 in a mansion adjacent to the International College of Surgeons,
which was founded in 1935 by Max Thorek. The lakefront mansion was designed by
Howard Van Doren Shaw and completed in 1917 for Eleanor Robinson Countiss, who
was the daughter of a Diamond Match Company executive.
