Although Chicago architect Bertrand Goldberg (1913-1997) is perhaps
best known for his corncob buildings in downtown,
he was also involved in prefabricate house construction through
Standard Houses Corporation, a company he founded along
with Gilmer Black, Edwin Ashcroft, and Ross Beatty.
The group's second demonstration project was a collection
of five
Standard Houses Corporation model 27
in Melrose Park, IL built in 1939
on 22nd Avenue between Division Street and North Avenue.
Remarkably, two of the houses were still standing seventy-three years later and
discovered by the folks at Forgotten Chicago. We
briefly paused in front of the houses during a 2012 bus
tour of Melrose Park.
