In 2008 the population of Cairo was around
3,600 residents.
Efforts to capitalize on Cairo's lovely remaining Gilded Age
architecture for tourism were not very successful and the town has few
employment opportunities. The exodus left Cairo's Main Street a
ghost town which remained eerily intact when I visited in 2002.
The Highway 60 bridge over the Ohio River and a park on the site of the old
Fort Defiance sit just to the south of the city at the point where the
two rivers meet.
