I was a weekend/overnight disk jockey at KIOC (K-106 FM) when I was a freshman at Lamar University in Beaumont. The station had an adult contemporary format and I had listened to it frequently growing up across the state border in Lake Charles, LA. I was a pretty crappy DJ, but it was an automated station that didn't ask much of the operators except that they be licensed, have a pleasant voice, be able to read weather forecasts, and show up on time, which I usually did.

The studios were housed in a moble home adjacent to the 855-foot transmission tower, which was owned by what was then KJAC-TV (channel 4).

The automation system was by Sono-Mag (SMC) and I recall it being fairly reliable, although I never had to program the thing. The station was moving from full automation to automation-assisted live DJ, which would become standard as the technology improved over the 1980s.
