Dunellen Theatre

Dunellen, NJ

Opened: 1922

Hosford's Theatre opened as a movie theatre on the site of a number of failed theatrical establishments going back to 1913. The theatre was the site of a surprising amount of community controversy over the years, most notably in the '20s when the owner ran afoul of local religious leaders and the KKK for showing films on Sunday. Current owner Richard Zupko purchased the largely derelict building in 1989 with plans to integrate it with the tavern he owns next door. The Dunellen began showing movies again in 2001 and we were part of an attempt to prime the live theatre pump when we visited in 2002. (6/1/02)
