96th Street Station
The 96th Street station will be the northern terminus of the Second Avenue Subway
until Phase II of construction extends it to its final destination at 125th Street.
A few blocks of tunnels were actually dug north of 96th Street in the 1970s before
the city's fiscal problems stopped construction. The station will extend between
92nd Street and 97th Street with three planned station entrances: The SW corner
of 96th St., the NE corner of 94th St. and the SW corner of 94th St. Two buildings
are scheduled for demolition: Century Lumber on the SW corner of 97th St. and a
brownstone on the NE corner of 93rd St.
At the time I first visited in December of 2007, work had already begun on
rerouting utility lines in preparation for station construction and insertion
of the boring machine that will create the tunnel down to 63rd St.
