Richard Morris Hunt
Fifth Avenue (at 69th Street, across from the Frick Museum)
Richard Morris Hunt (1827 - 1895) was a prominant American architect. Most of Hunt's New York works have been demolished but remaining structures include the facade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the pedestel of the Statue of Liberty and the 1883 neo-classical building on Amsterdam Avenue at 103rd street that houses the American Youth Hostels.
This neo-Renaissance excedra (a semicircular portico with a curved bench) houses a bust of Hunt by Daniel Chester French (1850 - 1931) that was unveiled in 1898. The two surrounding statues represent Architecture and Painting/Sculpture and the tablets surrounding the structure contain engravings of the names of design organizations in which Hunt was an important figure.
