Ravenswood Generating Station

This power plant sits just across the East River from Roosevelt Island in Long Island City. The plant was opened in 1963 by Consolidated Edison and was nicknamed "Big Allis" after its million-kilowatt Allis-Chalmers generator (the largest generator in the world at the time). The facility was sold to Keyspan Energy in 1999.

In 2005, the facility was rated at 2,400 MW, producing 25% of NYC's power with three large steam-generating units, a 250 megawatt combined-cycle generating unit and 17 gas turbine generators.
