Muhraqa

Muhraqa is the located on the N.E. angle of the Mount Carmel range overlooking the plain of Esdraelon. The site is the traditional location of the sacrifice of Elijah the Prophet mentioned in 1 Kings 18. After winning a competition (under the supervision of King Ahab of Megiddo fame) with the prophets of Baal to prove whose God was real, the prophets were executed here. Identification of the site dates to at least the 13th century. The chapel we visited here was built in 1883 and is owned by the Carmelites, a Catholic religious order.
