Our tour concluded in Jaffa, just to the south of the hotel where we started in Tel Aviv. Archaeological evidence exists for settlement at this location as early as the eighth millennium BCE, although the first written evidence is an Egyptian letter from 1,440 BCE. Like all these ancient Israeli cities, Jaffa has changed hands numerous times during its long existence and its not clear exactly how much of the city predates the specifically dated 19th and 20th century structures.

Jaffa appears four times in the old testament (spelled Joppa in the NIV): as one of the cities given to the tribe of Dan (Joshua 19), as one of the ports for the cedars of Lebanon used for the both temples (2 Chronicles 2, Ezra 3), and where Jonah started the voyage that ended in the belly of a fish (Jonah 1). Jaffa appears in the Christian bible (Acts 9-11) as a base of operations for the apostle Peter.
