Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad Depot

Jackson, MS

This passenger depot on the western edge of downtown behind the old (second) Capitol Building was originally built in 1927 for the New Orleans Great Northern Railroad Company, which merged with the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in 1938 to become the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio railroad. Service ceased in 1972 when the rail line was sold to the Illinois Central. This depot building was purchased by the State in 1984 and restored as an office for the Department of Archives and History. Portions of the branch that connected with the mainline south of Downtown were still visible on Commerce Street and used for car storage when I visited in 2011.

The thing to keep in mind is that there is nothing unusual about unusual weather...It's actually the norm. (Joe Sobel, meterologist)
