Horace Wilkinson Bridge
The Horace Wilkinson Bridge carries six lanes of Interstate 10 over the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge, LA. The Bridge is a continuous steel truss through deck with an overall length of 14,150 feet, a 4,550 foot superstructure and a 1,235 clear span. The navigation channel is 500 feet wide with the span 175 feet above the water at river mile 229.3. The bridge opened on April 10, 1968.
The bridge is actually named after three separate Horace Wilkinsons who served a total of 54 years in the Louisiana legislature.
When I visited in 2003, there was a decrepit but photogenic dock structure on the east bank.
Most inventors and engineers I've met are like me. They're shy and they live in their heads. They're almost like artists. In fact, the very best of them are artists. And artists work best alone ... Not on a committee. Not on a team. (Steve Wozniak)
